The Clark familys story begins with the immigration of John Clark from Liverpool, England and his marriage to Hannah Madigan, an Irish immigrant. Shortly after their marriage in 1866, John Clark obtained employment in a cutlery in Greenfield, Massachusetts and thus began his familys long history in manufacturing silverware. Their quest to find a better way of life led the family to Buckland and eventually to Bay State Village in Northampton, where three generations of the family lived and worked. While the cutlery industry provided John and Hannah with the means to support their family and purchase a home, the culture of the manufacturing village created challenges and hardships for subsequent generations.
